| The
Building now recognised as the K2 Restaurant was first Built in 1936.The
building was used by several Breweries as it was ideally situated
next to the river and the beer was delivered in barrels by boat. Later
it was converted into a pub called The Whip and Collar. After a search
of the area to find the best site for his restaurant the pub the Whip
and Collar was bought in early 1994.
Riaz
the manager of K2 has learnt his trade over many years. Starting
work at 16 in a local restaurant and working his way up to running
top London restaurants. It was while working in London that Riaz
decided that he would like to bring top quality Balti cuisine to
his home town of Hemel Hempstead.
Local
architects and builders were commissioned to create a stylish interior
in the Mogul style, the pub was closed and opened six months later
as the restaurant you see today.
Why
K2? The roof shape of the building closely resembles the outline
of the mountain and the site is located at Two Waters Road where
two rivers meet. Also the K2 Mountain is situated in the region
of Kashmir, Pakistan known as Baltistan where Balti cooking originates
from.
Riaz
has a passion for Kashmir food which he wanted to pass on to his
customers. All his chefs are trained in the origional method of
cooking still used in continental countries today, all food is cooked
fresh using the best herbs, spices, vegetables and most succulent
cuts of meat. By combining modern technology with traditional clay
ovens our dishes allow you to enjoy authentic Kashmir exquisite
textures and flavours. The menu is constantly being up dated and
along side your usual favourites you will find special traditional
dishes from Kashmir and Baltistan to delight you.
In
2001 the restaurant was extended again to provide a beautiful glass
conservatory overlooking the landscaped garden and river, with a
seperate function room with its own bar and opening on to the grounds
for private dinners and parties.
The
Reputation of this restaurant has spread as diners recommend it
to their colleagues and friends. So it is always a good idea to
book your table.
